Harold Sjursen

Harold Sjursen is a philosopher of technology and of comparative philosophy of culture.  He is Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at both New York University – Shanghai and New York University – Abu Dhabi, as well as Professor Emeritus of Technology, Culture and Society at New York University – Tandon School of Engineering / Polytechnic Institute where he was chair of humanities and social sciences. Currently he is Visiting Professor of Engineering Ethics at Beihang University in Beijing and Visiting Research Professor in the Higher Education Research Institute, East China University of Science and Technology. He served for six years as the Vice-President and Scientific Director of the UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education based at Monash University.  He has an extensive record of publications on topics addressing the role of the humanities in engineering education. His research interest has been in the philosophy of technology. He is completing a monograph on Hans Jonas’ technological ethics for the future.  His current project is a study of how technology and science were understood in the ancient civilizations of China, Greece, Persia and India.
