SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Bioengineering - preparing students for real-life challenges (Granta)
DESCRIPTION:Global populations are living longer\, and consequently\, the demand for more sophisticated biomedical devices is growing. It is important to consider the materials used throughout a product’s lifecycle\, i.e. from design to testing\, through regulatory approvals\, production and the end of life. But how can educators prepare students to enter this multi-disciplinary field? \nIn this live webinar\, Grant’s panelists show how the Bioengineering Edition in CES EduPack can help students understand why some materials are more appropriate than others for particular applications. With support from science notes\, video tutorials and learning resources\, students can quickly work their way through materials selection exercises as demonstrated in the demo. \nWhat you will learn\n\nBe inspired by practical ideas for engaging students with materials selection for bioengineering\nView a materials selection case study focused on biomaterials\nLearn what data is available for education and research in medical devices with CES EduPack and the ASM Medical Devices database\nFind out how the CES EduPack software supports materials-related teaching across the curriculum.\n\nWho should take part?\n\nAnyone teaching bioengineering-related subjects in engineering\, science\, or design—find out how CES EduPack could support your teaching\n\nWebinar website and registration >>

SUMMARY:8th International Conference on Appropriate Technology
DESCRIPTION:Zangbeto Temple by Linda de Volder via Flickr Creative Commons \nEndogenous Knowledge\, Appropriate Technology and Innovation: Linking the Past and the Future\n\n\nThe 8th International Conference on Appropriate Technology will:\n\n\nPromote Knowledge-based Endogenous Development and the diffusion of related innovations to support Appropriate Technology (AT) practice.\nIdentify\, initiate and combine AT contributions based on both pre-modern and modern knowledge in a manner that is rooted in an appropriate historical perspective\nProvide a forum for networking on AT solutions for the 21st century through the recognition\, valorization and re-appropriation of locally-grounded knowledge and practices\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBackground\n\nLocally-grounded and useful knowledge\, both tacit and codified\, is one of the most reliable bases for long-term\, sustainable prosperity. Unfortunately\, much of this knowledge remains under-recognized and undervalued\, with turnkey solutions from elsewhere often being presented as readily available or convenient. At present\, large numbers of people in the Global South\, particularly in Africa\, still lack access to clean water\, sanitation\, clean energy\, reliable food and nutrition\, and safe transportation\, among other challenges. Yet in those same societies\,  some people have time-tested\,  demonstrable approaches to resolving them\, while others are engaged in cutting-edge scientific research and technological development.  All of these\, to the extent that they are informed by contextually-relevant needs\, and priorities represent an endogenous knowledge resource base.  However\, refining\, upgrading\, applying and diffusing this knowledge in the form of improved products\, services and practices also requires the dissemination of lessons and experiences between similarly motivated actors from a broad cross-section of any given society. In exploring various local challenges together from an Appropriate Technology perspective\, we believe that we can contribute to a more plural\, multi-centric\, equitable\, sustainable and ultimately more just global community\n\n\n\n\nConference website >>

SUMMARY:International Reserach Symposium in Problem Based Learning (Tsinghua University\, Aalborg University & UNESCO)
DESCRIPTION:Tsinghua University\, Beijing by Jon via Flickr Creative Commons \nInnovation\, PBL\, and competencies in engineering education\n\nSustainability problems\, industry 4.0\, or the next industrial revolution\, are examples of a paradigm shift in engineering where engineers need new types of knowledge and competencies to address the professional challenges. Problem Based\, Project Organized Learning (PBL) is an innovative learning approach where authentic and real problems are used as the point of departure for learning and enhances not only engineering fundamental knowledge but also problem-solving skills\, teamwork\, communication\, critical thinking\, and communication. PBL has been shown to enhance graduate attributes and professional competences in terms of initiative\, innovation and employability\, and has been adopted in leading universities around the world. \nWith this in mind\, the 7th International Research Symposium on PBL (IRSPBL 2018) theme is “Innovation\, PBL and competencies in Engineering Education”. The International Centre for Engineering Education\, Tsinghua University (China) hosts and organizes the symposium together with Aalborg Centre for PBL in Engineering Science and Sustainability\, Aalborg University (Denmark)\, both leaders in their fields and Centres established under the auspices of UNESCO. The symposium aims to contribute to building an international community of educators\, practitioners and researchers working with PBL. To fulfill this aim\, the symposium committee welcomes contributions on a range of related topic. \nConference website >>

SUMMARY:European Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference (SEFI)
DESCRIPTION:DTU Lyngby by News Oresund via Flickr Creative Commons. \nCreativity\, Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Engineering Education\n\nCreativity\, innovation and entrepreneurship must obviously be part of any engineering educational program. These three items are pillars of the engineering identity. However\, SEFI argues that they are more than just pillars\, they also present the perfect context for excellent engineering education. Creativity\, innovation and entrepreneurship offer a perfect pedagogical framework and an authentic envelope to teach all aspects of engineering with a holistic systems approach. \nIt follows the philosophy: \n“You do not have to be an engineer to become one – but to become an engineer\, you have to be like one.” \nEngineering programmes and courses where students work with real-life challenges create a strong environment for learning. Students acquire the core disciplinary knowledge through heavy scientific and technical subjects as well as methods of synthesis. This knowledge is integrated with the learning of personal\, interpersonal\, professional and innovative skills. Students face problem-solving\, critical thinking\, teamwork\, management\, collaboration and communication skills. \nThis is why creativity\, innovation and entrepreneurship are not just parts of engineering education – they are the powerful means to engineering education excellence in itself. \nParticipants will be exploring this theme through keynote sessions and conference tracks. \nSEFI is very much aware of the responsibility of engineering education in connection with the global challenges that are facing the world. Thus\, SEFI recognizes the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and support the UN Sustainability Development Goals. SEFI sees creativity\, innovation and entrepreneurship for engineering education excellence as part of the right strategy to cross the finishing line in just 12 years from now. \nConference website >>
