SUMMARY:7th African Engineering Education Association International Conference (AEEA)
DESCRIPTION:Strengthening Engineering Education through Innovation and Collaboration\nAbstracts are being accepted through April 23\, 2019. \nCall for paper details >> \nThis conference is to provide a forum for educators\, professional organizations and industry leaders from all over the world in general and the African Region in particular\, to discuss and proffer solutions to common problems in engineering education.  Also\, the Conference will critically examine approaches to teaching\, learning and curriculum structures that would advance engineering education in resource-constrained environments like African nations.  It is anticipated that the conference will foster exchange of information\, links\, and collaboration between member nations on the one hand and the rest of the world on the other. \nCurrently\, graduates from most African Universities may not be able to compete globally because of the inherent challenges in the training institutions. The major challenge confronting academics is to produce with limited resources global engineers that espouse attributes found in the notions of innovation\, entrepreneurship and sustainability. The conference will deliberate on tangible ideas on how to produce with lean resources\, engineers with necessary skills and orientation that can compete globally. \nWorkshop on “Innovative\, Pedagogy and Engineering Academic Leadership Application in Africa” will be run back to back with the conference. \nConference website >>

SUMMARY:Hague Summer Institute on Peace Engineering
DESCRIPTION:herprettybravesoul \nFirst Annual Hague Summer Institute on Peace Engineering\nThe application of science and engineering principles to promote and support peace\nThe Hague\, Netherlands // August 19-23\, 2019 \nOver the past five years\, there has been a renewed interest in the field of Peace Engineering; a concept first introduced in 2005 by Aarne Vesilind who defined it as ‘the proactive use of engineering skills to promote a peaceful and just existence for all people’. Another definition proposed by the International Federation of Educational Engineering Societies (IFEES) considers peace engineering as ‘the application of science and engineering principles to promote and support peace’. It recognizes the importance of the contribution of the engineering profession to ‘a world where prosperity\, sustainability\, social equity\, entrepreneurship\, transparency\, community voice and engagement and a culture of quality thrive’. \nPeace Engineering represents a unique platform to emphasize the importance of the engineering profession in addressing in a multidisciplinary and global manner the peacebuilding aspects of many complex challenges faced by humanity in the 21st century. Examples of these challenges include: climate change; national and global population growth and migration; rapid urbanization; security and transparency of water\, energy\, land and food resources; access to shelter\, health and education; transportation and communication services; disaster risk and emergency management; environmental protection and natural resource management; and resource management in transboundary and conflict-prone areas. \nIn 2018\, Drexel University launched the first ever MS degree in Peace Engineering and the University of New Mexico (UNM) held the first conference on peace engineering in Albuquerque. The conference brought over 500 people from academia\, the private and\npublic sectors\, and civil society (44 countries\, 301 institutions). The conference emphasized that engineering is indeed critical to peacebuilding\, peacemaking and peacekeeping. At the same time\, it raised many questions about the research\, educational\, and outreach components of peace engineering. For instance: (i) How can engineers best be equipped with the attitudes\, skills and knowledge necessary to work at the intersection between what is expected of them by society in their professional careers and the peacebuilding\, peacemaking and peacekeeping activities; (ii) how can peace engineering foster a new ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship (business and social) and (iii) how peace data can measure our positive and negative interactions and impact on peace both as they happen and over time. \nSince the launching of the program at Drexel and the UNM conference\, various parties around the world have voiced an interest in learning more about peace engineering and possibly contributing to its development. These parties recognize that there is a need to educate engineers to be more than just providers of technical solutions when addressing development and peace issues. There is also a need to scale up peace engineering worldwide by developing programs that are likely to resonate well with the current and future generations of engineers. \nA first step in scaling up peace engineering at the international level is to establish a multidisciplinary and international community of practice to help shape the education\, research and development\, outreach and practical components of this new emerging field of engineering. A second step is to recognize that\, at a minimum\, any peace engineering program should give engineering students the tools and mobility to: (i) learn who they are as global citizen engineers; (ii) become familiar with the fundamentals of conflict management and peace studies; (iii) acquire the skills necessary to work in different socioeconomic\, political and cultural contexts of peacebuilding\, peacemaking and peacekeeping; (iv) become systems thinkers and competent in using tools from systems and complexity sciences; (v) see peace and conflict with a systems perspective; (vi) be cognizant of the nexus between policies and science\, technology and (vii) learn to measure\, model and simulate peaceful interactions across varying conditions. \nFinally\, a third step in scaling up peace engineering is to complement the core components mentioned above with additional tools and concepts specific to the development and peace issues being addressed. It is possible to envision\, for instance\, a portfolio of different types of peace engineering educational and professional programs (e.g. degrees and certificates) based on context (cultural\, political\, environmental\, climatic\, physical\, etc.) and scale (physical and temporal) at which peace and development issues are being considered. \nThe 2019 Summer Institute\nWe are inviting a select group of leading contributors to this  emerging field (20-30) to attend a founding workshop on Peace Engineering (PE) in the Hague\, NL from August 13-18\, 2019. The goals of the workshop are fourfold: (i) convene a multidisciplinary group of participants interested in Peace Engineering to help define and launch the field; (ii) review existing programs and activities related to PE; (iii) begin integrating PE into the education\, research and outreach components in academia\, the private sector\, public sector\, and civil society; (iv) develop an action plan for a PE community of practice for the 2019-2020 time frame and beyond. \nWe envision the workshop to consist of a combination of keynote lectures\, breakout group discussion periods\, and presentations of case studies illustrating the range of applications of PE in addressing complex issues\, in both the expected areas such as those related to the United Nations SDGs\, transboundary issues\, and violent conflicts; and in unexpectedly positive ways\, in industry itself. We expect the workshop participants to become the founding and supporting members of a new PE group or society.

SUMMARY:2019 International Engineering Education Forum (Beihang University)
DESCRIPTION:Raj Eiamworakul \nJune 28-29\, 2019 // Beijing\, China \nDeveloping Engineering Leaders for the 21st Century\nThe International Engineering Education Forum (IEEF) of Beihang University is the first of a series of international events the University expects to organize for both Beihang University and China. We expect that the presentations\, dialogue and interactions in the Forum allow participants to exchange ideas and initiatives to enhance engineering education. IEEF is organized by the School of General Engineering (SGE)\, a new school of engineering within Beihang University that started in 2016. Selected by the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs and the Ministry of Education of China as an “International Model School” with a “Propulsion Project for an International Model School of Higher Education”.SGE aims at becoming a model of international teaching and pushes to bring about a comprehensive reform to Beihang University and higher education in China. \nThe theme of the 2019 Beihang University’s International Engineering Education Forum is Developing Engineering Leaders for the 21st Century. \nWhy we have chosen this theme? In today’s fast pace and change-driven environment\, it has become ever more critical for engineering organizations to ensure that they have the engineering talent to expeditiously step in into leadership roles. Because many engineers will have to take over leadership roles at some point in their careers\, engineering schools are developing and implementing Engineering Leadership Programs to provide students with engineering leadership competencies. These programs involve not only seminars and lectures on engineering leadership but also experiential (hands-on) learning and interaction with leaders in the profession. \nWhat are the Forum’s Objectives? We hope that the program we have put together will allow participates to learn about successful world class engineering leadership programs\, their implementation and challenges. The Forum speakers will address questions like: Why an engineering leadership program? What are the components of the program? What are the criteria for admission to the program? How long does it take for students to complete requirements? What kind of experiences do students undertake? How are leadership competencies assessed? The Forum will also provide opportunities for interaction and discussion with speakers and attendees on the topics presented. \nForum website >>

SUMMARY:National Conference on Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Heroica Escuela Naval Militar \nThe Training of Engineers\nThe Academic Committee of the National Engineering Conference (CNI) has as its mission to analyze the topics that especially emphasize the substantive functions and relevant activities in the process of training young engineering students. Based on the experiences and contributions of the academic community aimed at enriching knowledge\, methodologies\, and tools for the comprehensive training of engineers. \nOn this occasion the contributions and recommendations of previous conferences have been reviewed\, which managers and academics from the affiliated institutions have provided us\, as well as the proposal of the Headquarters\, who expressed the importance they have in the integral training process of the students of engineering\, educational innovation\, research activities\, the development of technology transfer projects\, consulting\, linking with the environment\, the impact of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with their environment\, mobility and internationalization programs \, among other. \nIn previous editions\, the CNI has addressed a specific theme\, giving the academic community the opportunity to exchange experiences and good practices on topics that are very relevant for the training of engineers. Some examples have been: Education by competencies\, the incidence of information technologies in the training of engineers\, sustainable development\, the quality and relevance of engineering programs\, internationalization\, and linkage. \nThese topics\, addressed in different editions of the CNI\, have remained valid throughout the last years. The IES have continued making important efforts in the development of academic experiences for engineering students that contribute efficiently to the development of disciplinary and personal competences\, which allow them to be competitive nationally and internationally. Experiences oriented towards detonating skills such as effective communication orally and in writing\, the command of the English language\, the connection with the environment\, consulting\, research and technology transfer. All this within an international context. \nThese activities\, developed by the academics and managers of the IES\, correspond to medium and long-term strategies and work plans\, where progressive results can be seen that have had a very important impact on the training of engineering students. In such a way that\, for this Academic Committee\, it is of great value to open the CNI to several of these topics\, which have proven to be pertinent and valid. \nAs it has been observed through the different events that the ANFEI has carried out\, a large part of these issues have been very important because of the impact they have on the students’ formation\, allowing them direct contact with reality\, and the opportunity to participate personally in the study and solution of problems that generate a high added value. \nThe development of strategies and good academic practices\, as a result of educational innovation projects\, have made it possible to establish highly efficient and reliable higher education models that allow the development of disciplinary competencies in engineering students. The linking of HEIs\, through projects of social and community impact\, allows students to generate awareness of the co-responsibility they have with their environment. The development of consulting and technology transfer projects confronts students and professors to real-life scenarios\, where the creative and innovative application of engineering knowledge is essential. The mobility and internationalization programs allow teachers and students to have a broader conception of the world and its discipline. \nFinally\, the academic quality\, without a doubt\, has its sustenance in an efficient leadership\, that allows the development of practices\, policies and procedures oriented to improve important indicators\, such as the reduction of the desertion\, the terminal efficiency\, and the degree. Therefore\, the Academic Committee of the National Engineering Conference proposed an important change of the CNI format to the Executive Committee of the Association\, which decided to include several chapters based on the topics that have been considered\, relevant\, current and pertinent.’ \nBased on the aforementioned\, all Higher Education Institutions\, as well as organizations and professionals interested in the subject of the training of engineers\, are invited to participate in the XLVI National Engineering Conference that will take as its theme: \n“THE TRAINING OF ENGINEERS” \nThe topics to be addressed\, aligned with the general theme of the CNI are: \nEducational Innovation\nLinkage with the environment (social impact). \nConference website >>
