SUMMARY:IRSPBL 2020 // 8th International Research Symposium on PBL (Aalborg University & UNESCO)
DESCRIPTION:Educate for the future: PBL\, sustainability and digitalisation\nAugust 16-18\, 2020 // Aalborg Denmark\nUnited Nations developed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which constitute a framework for sustainable development actions towards 2030. Engineering plays a crucial role in addressing the SDGs and engineering and science students need to learn how to analyse and solve complex sustainable problems. Therefore\, the competences of interdisciplinarity\, systems thinking\, collaboration and complex problem solving are needed for educating for the future. Educating for sustainability requires innovative\, student-centred\, problem-oriented learning approaches such as PBL – problem-based and project-based learning. When PBL is intertwined with digitalisation\, it furthermore unfolds into new ways of organising learning and engineering practice. The combination of PBL and digitalisation hold new and yet unforeseen potentials to address the complexity\, flexibility and international collaboration needed in the strive for the sustainable development goals. \nThe IRSPBL 2020 welcomes research and best practices contributions on one\, or more\, of the following themes: \n\nSustainability and interdisciplinarity\nDemocracy\, diversity and social progress\nStrategies for digitalised learning\nManagement of change\nCurriculum design\nGenerating innovative and interdisciplinary knowledge and practices\nAssessment methods\nVariety of problems\, projects and learning spaces\nFacilitation in a PBL environment\nBlended PBL learning environments\nPBL and entrepreneurship\nPBL for continuing professional development\n\nIRSPBL offers two type of submissions\, organised in two tracks: \n\nA PBL practice track targeting best practice papers.\nA PBL research track targeting research and conceptual papers.\n\nAll contributions go through a process of blinded peer-review. \nConference Website >>

SUMMARY:GEDC 2019 Santiago
DESCRIPTION:From October 20 to 23\, 2019\, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) will host the GEDC’s first stand-alone conference in South America. Juan Carlos de la Llera Martin\, longtime GEDC member who serves as the Dean of PUC’s Faculty of Engineering\, spearheaded the bidding process. \nThe Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) was founded in Santiago on June 21\, 1888 under the initiative of the Archbishop of Santiago\, Monsignor Mariano Casanova\, with the aim of being an institution that integrates academic excellence and a formation inspired by Christian doctrine. The university had a great impact in Chile and plays a relevant public role in all aspects of society. \nAccording to the 2018 QS ranking\, PUC is number one in Latin America and 137th worldwide. The Faculty of Engineering was established in 1892 with a focus in Civil Engineering and just 30 students. Today\, the Faculty’s 5\,550 account for approximately 20% of the university’s entire student body and 13 disciplines in the Faculty of Engineering and another school dedicated to engineering for civil construction. \nGEDC 2019 Santiago is planned for October 20-23\, 2019 in Chile. More conference details will be published after WEEF-GEDC 2018 Albuquerque.

SUMMARY:CIAF—Continuous Improvement Assessment Forum (ABET)
DESCRIPTION:Elijah Hail \nThis new and interactive forum offers a facilitated experience for program teams to analyze and improve their current assessment and evaluation processes. Over the course of two days\, participants will work together on a series of activities that include short “best practice” presentations\, peer evaluation of program assessment plans\, and self-evaluation of team materials. \nUnlike other ABET workshops\, CIAF gives attendees the opportunity to bring their own assessment materials* to be reviewed. Each team will have the opportunity to receive peer feedback on their current processes and plans for improvement while experienced facilitators provide guidance throughout the program. At the end of the Forum\, participants will leave with individual program team action plans for continuous improvement. \nThis hands-on forum emphasizes program teamwork and participation\, therefore we cannot accept individual registrations. For maximum effect\, teams should have three members but no more than five and must register together. Individual registrations will not be accepted. Registration is limited so form your team and register early. \nTo maximize the experience\, we recommend that at least one team member has attended the Fundamentals of Assessment Workshop or the Institute for the Development of Excellence in Assessment (IDEAL). \nWorkshop website >>

SUMMARY:ITHET 2019—Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (IEEE\, UNESCO)
DESCRIPTION:Photograph by Carlarocaporto\, distributed under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. \nThe convergence of current technologies provides the infrastructure for transmitting and storing information faster and cheaper. For information to be used in gaining knowledge\, however\, environments for collecting\, storing\, disseminating\, sharing and constructing knowledge are needed. Such environments\, knowledge media\, brings together telecommunication\, computer and networking technologies\, learning theories and cognitive sciences to form meaningful environments that provides for a variety of learner needs. ITHET 2019 will continue with the traditional themes of previous events. However\, the next ITHET will have “Studio” based learning as its special theme. We define “Studio” based learning as a progression from “Content” based\, and then to “Enquiry” based\, and then to “Studio” based learning. In the first\, we the teachers choose both the questions and answers that students should know. In the second\, we choose the questions and the students find the answers. In the “Studio” approach the students must discover the questions for themselves and also find the answers to those questions. It is hoped that this will enable students to articulate their knowledge and skills into capability. \nConference website >>

SUMMARY:7th African Engineering Education Association International Conference (AEEA)
DESCRIPTION:Strengthening Engineering Education through Innovation and Collaboration\nAbstracts are being accepted through April 23\, 2019. \nCall for paper details >> \nThis conference is to provide a forum for educators\, professional organizations and industry leaders from all over the world in general and the African Region in particular\, to discuss and proffer solutions to common problems in engineering education.  Also\, the Conference will critically examine approaches to teaching\, learning and curriculum structures that would advance engineering education in resource-constrained environments like African nations.  It is anticipated that the conference will foster exchange of information\, links\, and collaboration between member nations on the one hand and the rest of the world on the other. \nCurrently\, graduates from most African Universities may not be able to compete globally because of the inherent challenges in the training institutions. The major challenge confronting academics is to produce with limited resources global engineers that espouse attributes found in the notions of innovation\, entrepreneurship and sustainability. The conference will deliberate on tangible ideas on how to produce with lean resources\, engineers with necessary skills and orientation that can compete globally. \nWorkshop on “Innovative\, Pedagogy and Engineering Academic Leadership Application in Africa” will be run back to back with the conference. \nConference website >>
