IRSPBL 2020 // 8th International Research Symposium on PBL (Aalborg University & UNESCO)

August 16, 2020 - August 18, 2020

Educate for the future: PBL, sustainability and digitalisation

August 16-18, 2020 // Aalborg Denmark

United Nations developed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which constitute a framework for sustainable development actions towards 2030. Engineering plays a crucial role in addressing the SDGs and engineering and science students need to learn how to analyse and solve complex sustainable problems. Therefore, the competences of interdisciplinarity, systems thinking, collaboration and complex problem solving are needed for educating for the future. Educating for sustainability requires innovative, student-centred, problem-oriented learning approaches such as PBL – problem-based and project-based learning. When PBL is intertwined with digitalisation, it furthermore unfolds into new ways of organising learning and engineering practice. The combination of PBL and digitalisation hold new and yet unforeseen potentials to address the complexity, flexibility and international collaboration needed in the strive for the sustainable development goals.

The IRSPBL 2020 welcomes research and best practices contributions on one, or more, of the following themes:

  • Sustainability and interdisciplinarity
  • Democracy, diversity and social progress
  • Strategies for digitalised learning
  • Management of change
  • Curriculum design
  • Generating innovative and interdisciplinary knowledge and practices
  • Assessment methods
  • Variety of problems, projects and learning spaces
  • Facilitation in a PBL environment
  • Blended PBL learning environments
  • PBL and entrepreneurship
  • PBL for continuing professional development

IRSPBL offers two type of submissions, organised in two tracks:

  1. A PBL practice track targeting best practice papers.
  2. A PBL research track targeting research and conceptual papers.

All contributions go through a process of blinded peer-review.
