Developing Engineering Leaders for the 21st Century
The International Engineering Education Forum (IEEF) of Beihang University is the first of a series of international events the University expects to organize for both Beihang University and China. We expect that the presentations, dialogue and interactions in the Forum allow participants to exchange ideas and initiatives to enhance engineering education. IEEF is organized by the School of General Engineering (SGE), a new school of engineering within Beihang University that started in 2016. Selected by the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs and the Ministry of Education of China as an “International Model School” with a “Propulsion Project for an International Model School of Higher Education”.SGE aims at becoming a model of international teaching and pushes to bring about a comprehensive reform to Beihang University and higher education in China.
The theme of the 2019 Beihang University’s International Engineering Education Forum is Developing Engineering Leaders for the 21st Century.
Why we have chosen this theme? In today’s fast pace and change-driven environment, it has become ever more critical for engineering organizations to ensure that they have the engineering talent to expeditiously step in into leadership roles. Because many engineers will have to take over leadership roles at some point in their careers, engineering schools are developing and implementing Engineering Leadership Programs to provide students with engineering leadership competencies. These programs involve not only seminars and lectures on engineering leadership but also experiential (hands-on) learning and interaction with leaders in the profession.
What are the Forum’s Objectives? We hope that the program we have put together will allow participates to learn about successful world class engineering leadership programs, their implementation and challenges. The Forum speakers will address questions like: Why an engineering leadership program? What are the components of the program? What are the criteria for admission to the program? How long does it take for students to complete requirements? What kind of experiences do students undertake? How are leadership competencies assessed? The Forum will also provide opportunities for interaction and discussion with speakers and attendees on the topics presented.
