Webinar with Foad Hamidi
Wednesday, June 10 at 8 AM EDT
Participatory and inclusive design approaches advocate for the engagement of stakeholders early on in the design process, both to ensure that outcomes are informed by the needs and desires of real-world users, and to avoid causing unintended harm. I present several research projects that underline the importance of including diverse perspectives when creating emerging. These projects include the deployment of a technical employment training program for youth in Baltimore City, the design of a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) prototyping platform for the creation of audio interfaces for children with disabilities in Kenya, and a study of the privacy perspectives of older adults towards assistive technologies that collect personal data. I conclude with reflections on how to work with community-based organizations, non-profits, and NGOs when designing and deploying innovative technologies.
