A.I. and COVID-19

Webinar with J.P. Auffret, Ph.D on April 14th at 13:00 GMT

AI has much promise and potential for medicine and healthcare and contributed to combatting the COVID-19 pandemic in ways ranging from early detection and diagnosis, treatment monitoring, contact tracing, drug and vaccine development and case / mortality forecasting.   Great challenges for AI and medicine development and adoption remain though as indicated by a Lancet January 2021 editorial titled “Artificial Intelligence for COVID-19:  Savior or Saboteur?”    The talk reviews progress and initiatives for AI in medicine and applications related to COVID-19 and concludes with discussion of ongoing AI and medicine challenges and considerations.

Jean-Pierre Auffret, Executive Degree Programs Director for the GMU’s School of Management

J.P. Auffret is director, Center for Assurance Research and Engineering in the Volgenau School of Engineering and director, research partnerships in the School of Business at George Mason University.  He is also co-founder and current president of the International Academy of CIO.   Auffret’s work and research span a range of applied technology fields including CIO and ICT governance; cybersecurity leadership; and innovation and application of emerging technologies and with APEC, NSF, U.S. Department of State, World Bank, ITU and IBM. His experience includes executive positions with MCI and its joint venture with British Telecom, Concert and academic positions with George Mason, Duke University’s Center for International Development and as physicist-in-residence at American University.  Auffret earned a B.S. from Duke University where he was an A.B. Duke Scholar, M.B.A. from the University of Virginia and Ph.D. in Physics from American University.
